Battered by regional turbulence, Israel’s tech-infused economy has made virtue of handling challenge and adversity. Its legal profession is no exception, writes Dominic Carman.

Despite international law firms being allowed to operate in Israel, they have invariably chosen not to. The legal market is therefore monopolised by domestic players, many of which have grown significantly and the main contributory factor has been a glut of mergers. According to David Tadmor, co-chairman and managing partner of Tadmor Levy, today the largest firm has close to 400 fee-earners, whereas in 2000 it was around 65 lawyers. Herzog Fox & Neeman (HFN) is Israel’s largest law firm, with 380 fee-earners, and at least 20 Israeli firms now have more than 100 lawyers. ‘What sets us apart is that we have grown organically rather than through mergers like some of our competitors,’ says HFN infrastructure partner Mark Phillips.

Dear All,

We are excited to launch the second edition of Legally Israel 100 – IsraelDesks League Tables.

Last year, we received submissions from over 35 international law firms with an Israel Desk, creating league tables which have drawn much attention in the Israeli market, within law firms, companies and in the mainstream financial press. Based on your own feedback, as well as the enthusiasm for the tables, we are also introducing this year a leading individuals table to showcase expert lawyers who are active in each category.

Click here to view the 2019 rankings.

The deadline to submit is January 16th.

Please submit to the following email addresses: lee@legalmarketing.co.il.

Please click here for a few general questions (FAQ’s) we have encountered that we would like to share with you.

Please click here to download the submission form (new form).

The IsraelDesks League Tables are the only legal industry tables for global law firms with Israel desks, and the tables are valued by Israeli law firms and their clients. The tables recognize those law firms and lawyers advising on transactions and matters that involve Israeli clients and educate the local market as to where to send work abroad.

If you have any questions, technical or otherwise, relating to the submission, please feel free to email Lee Saunders at: lee@legalmarketing.co.il.

Best,

Idan Nishlis

The IsraelDesks League Tables are the only legal industry tables for global law firms with Israel desks, and tables valued by Israeli law firms and their clients. The tables recognize those law firms advising on transactions and matters that involve Israeli clients and educate the local market where to send work to abroad.

Benefits:
Whether Venture Capital financings, M&A or Capital Markets offerings, the objective of the pioneering IsraelDesks League Tables is to (1) showcase those global law firms with the interest, commitment and instructions in the Israeli market and (2) to use these tables to raise their profile before an extremely interested Israeli audience of lawyers, General Counsel and prospective clients.

Eligibility:
The entering firm must be headquartered or have its head office outside of Israel.

Your nominated transactions or matters must be either ongoing now or completed between January 1st, 2019 and December 31st, 2019.

How do I submit?
Free to enter, the process could not be simpler. There is a clear spreadsheet asking for minimal information about completed deals, which needs to be emailed to lee@legalmarketing.co.il  by January 16th 2020.

How is it judged?
Our methodology is purely quantitative. All the submissions are collated and analysed and, after a league table is determined, the rankings are decided looking at the volume and value of matters.

Where will it be Published?
The IsraelDesks League Tables will be widely published across the Israel legal sector, by press, social media, direct mailing and in the upcoming US-Israel Legal Review 2020 (Click to see the previous edition featuring the tables: US-Israel Legal Reviews 2019).

Questions:
If you have any questions please feel free to email Lee Saunders at: lee@legalmarketing.co.il.

DWF, the global legal business, is to open its 4th office in Germany through the recruitment of the entire Düsseldorf office of Marccus Partners.

Ten people, including five partners, will join DWF. Marccus Partners specialises in company law, M&A, insolvency, banking & finance, real estate and tax. Dr Norbert Knüppel, who is transferring from Marccus Partners, will be DWF’s executive partner in Düsseldorf.

DWF’s Düsseldorf opening will complement existing German offices in Berlin, Cologne and Munich, taking headcount in its German business to more than 80 people. Düsseldorf is DWF’s second new location since the IPO in March this year, following the entry into Poland in May with the acquisition of K&L Gates Jamka.

Ulrich Jüngst, chair of DWF in Europe, said: “We are very pleased to welcome Dr Knüppel and his team to DWF. They are very highly regarded and will be an excellent addition to our German business, significantly strengthening our corporate practice domestically as well as our ability to advise on cross-border transactions throughout Europe. This move further builds our international footprint, demonstrating continued delivery on this key IPO objective.”

Michael Falter, Managing Partner of DWF in Germany, added: “We welcome our new colleagues from Marccus Partners and look forward to working with them to develop an integrated Cologne – Düsseldorf office.”

Dr Norbert Knüppel said: “We were attracted to join DWF’s rapidly growing business with a strong reputation for innovation. It is investing in its national and global capabilities and we look forward to playing our part in DWF’s continued impressive expansion.”

These latest additions follow a busy month of expansion for DWF’s international business.  In September, DWF appointed a new corporate partner in Paris (Alexandre Piette), a head of insurance in Poland (Paweł Stykowski) and a new banking partner in the same office (Tomasz Kaczmarek).  It also appointed a new corporate principal lawyer in Sydney (Kim O’Reilly).
