Meta to pay NIS8.1m in Israel over Cambridge Analytica data scandal
An Israeli court approved a settlement requiring Meta to pay approximately NIS 8.1 million (around USD 2.2 million) in a class action tied to the Cambridge Analytica scandal, according to Ynetnews.
The case, originally filed in 2018, alleged that Facebook allowed third-party apps to access users’ personal data without proper consent and transfer it for political targeting purposes. Meta denied wrongdoing, arguing users had agreed to the platform’s data practices and that limited harm occurred in Israel.
The court approved the settlement in part due to changes Meta implemented to its data policies and the difficulty of proving direct harm to Israeli users. The funds will be directed toward public initiatives, including academic research and programs related to democracy and digital literacy.
