Israel launches Project Nexus to build locally produced quantum computer
Israel’s National AI Directorate and the Ministry of Finance Accountant General’s Department have announced Project Nexus, a new initiative aimed at advancing the development of a locally produced quantum computer in Israel.
The initiative is part of Government Decision 4255 and Israel’s broader national AI strategy, which is moving from policy planning into implementation. The government said the first projects will focus on quantum computing, physical AI, and foundational models, with the goal of strengthening Israel’s technological sovereignty and securing long-term global leadership in strategic technologies.
Quantum computing has been a government priority since 2018, with Israel seeking to position itself among the world’s leading countries in the field. Recent milestones include the unveiling of Israel’s first domestically built quantum computer in 2024 and a collaboration between Israeli quantum startup Qedma and IBM involving a 72-qubit superconducting quantum chip.
The government is also prioritizing physical AI, including systems that apply artificial intelligence to real-world environments, such as autonomous drones, industrial systems, and energy optimization. A Request for Information is expected to be published to map market capabilities and support Israeli leadership in foundational AI models.
